Why the Planetary?

Nils Gilman from the Berggruen Institute opens the 2024 Planetary Summit with a powerful message about the challenges facing our world today.
He talks about how crises like climate change, pandemics, and war are all connected—and why we need to start thinking differently if we want to solve them. Gilman introduces the idea of “planetarity”: understanding that we all live on one planet, deeply connected in every way.

In November 2024, the Planetary Summit, a two-day public event at the newly opened European headquarters in Venice’s Palazzo Diedo, brought together leading thinkers, scientists, and policymakers. The summit engaged in urgent dialogues on the emerging paradigm of The Planetary—a concept that challenges anthropocentric worldviews and calls for new frameworks of governance, knowledge, and action at planetary scale.

Over the course of two days, discussions explored the establishment of the planetary as a category of thought, the implications of extra-human and extra-planetary perspectives, and the evolving role of planetary sapience enabled by technology. Participants grappled with the limits of current governance structures and the urgent need for new planetary coordination and action. The summit also examined planetary pragmatism in an era of crisis, asking how institutions and epistemologies might be rethought to address challenges that transcend borders, species, and political systems.

The Planetary Summit 2024 marked a landmark moment in the study and practice of planetarity, bringing into focus the intersections of science, philosophy, and politics. As climate change, technological acceleration, and global interdependencies render traditional governance structures insufficient, the need for new planetary institutions and ways of thinking becomes ever more pressing. More than just a conversation, the summit served as a call to rethink how the planet is understood, inhabited, and shaped.
