Seduced & Abandoned: The Body in the Virtual World – Bruce Sterling

Seduced & Abandoned was one of a series of ICA conferences (spanning 12-13 March in 1994) held under the umbrella title Towards the Aesthetics of the Future that explored the connections between culture, society, politics and the impact upon them of new digital processes and technologies.

In this excerpt from ‘The Colonisation of Cyberspace ‘, Bruce Sterling, American author of `The Hacker Crackdown’, discusses institutional attempts to control the internet and the resulting computer underground and alternative computer culture. He talks about the “awful clunkiness” of computers and closes with his own vision of a virtual reality future.
